Sanitary napkins, which earlier fell in the 12% GST bracket, are now exempt from taxes. This was announced on 21 July 2018 by temporary Finance Minister Piyush Goyal and was put in effect from 27 July 2018.
Although this step has been taken after the government received public backlash for putting tax on a basic necessity, it does not appear that this measure will make them more accessible at cheaper prices.
