Who are you?

-Yashila Sharma

You must’ve heard adults say, ”what you say is what you become” and if you have heard that, you may not believe it either. But what if it is true? Who are you?

Imagine a glass half filled with water. Would you see this glass as half empty or half full? The way you see that glass actually defines you as a person.

If you see the glass as half empty it may be because of your pessimistic nature. Everything that happens may seem bad, it may seem like everything is falling apart and nothing is ever going to be okay.

If you see the glass half full it may be because of your optimistic nature. The situation may be bad but the faith that ‘it’ll be okay’ is what keeps you going. The faith that the other half of the glass will get filled eventually will keep you going.

So who are you?

A situation can be perceived in many different ways but most often than not there are two: negative and positive, bad and good, evil and virtuous.

For instance you have had a fight with your friend. Of course, the negative side of this would be that you may lose them. But, however hard the situation may be, there is always a positive side. In this situation remember that it will get sorted out or that everything happens for a reason and it’s better that both of you are taking a break.

More often than not, the thoughts coming across your mind may be that, “you’re not worth it”, “everyone leaves you”, “no one should be trusted”, “maybe there's something wrong with you.” The psychological term for these thoughts is, what everyone knows as, overthinking. The dictionary meaning for this is “to think about (something) too much or for too long.” This mostly leads to irrational decisions; which in this situation would be saying something to your friend and making it all much worse.

Let’s reflect back to the quote, “what you say is what you become”. In this situation you believed everything you had been overthinking about and in the end you did become what you said, the friend did leave.

Whereas, if you had been cool minded there would’ve been a possibility of it being sorted, or ended on good terms. Of course, there’s no guarantee but thinking of the situation logically instead of irrationally would have benefitted both sides.

So having faith in yourself plays a vital role in life. Being an optimist will benefit your life and help you grow as a person. Whereas being a pessimist will slowly lead to you seeing even joyful moments as problems and that won’t just affect you, but everybody around you as well.

So who are you?

However hard it is, it will get better and that is the least faith everyone should have in life. In fact, if everyone lacked faith in themselves and believed they couldn’t succeed, we wouldn’t be studying under the light bulbs that we do today. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, could’ve easily given up in his first (unsuccessful) try. But instead he tried and kept trying because he believed that he could, and he did make a light bulb after about a thousand tries. So, who are you?
