IS HUMANITY A MYTH?

Updated: Nov 15, 2018

Humanity is an expectation, a duty. However, nowadays, it is seen as a reinforced obligation which people refuse to follow. This is an amazing irony considering that we are ‘humans’ and what makes us ‘human’ is our ability to empathize, feel and sympathize. Perhaps, these very qualities have given birth to the term ‘being human’. But, are we ‘being human’? Is humanity something that we all are inculcating within ourselves or is it just a word that we lightly throw around or merely force into speeches. Or, is it a belief that we are unreasonably propagating?

When we switch on the television, or flip through the pages of the newspaper, a gush of negativity flows through us. On one side of the globe, it is as if Mother Nature is punishing us through disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes; leaving us with a feeling of helplessness. On the other side, events like bombings, threats or mass killings evoke an inexplicable feeling- a feeling of having power while not having control of it at the very same moment. This not only brings a sense of helplessness, but worse, a sense of hopelessness.

I believe that humanity is not an ‘idea’ or a ‘practice’ to be ‘preached’. It is, instead, an inbuilt mechanism, which ensures the survival of humans within a community and, in layman’s terms, prevents us from ‘behaving like animals’.

So, why is humanity overrated? Why is humanity a myth? The answer to these questions depend upon each individual. I believe that humanity is more of a notion than a propaganda. At the same time, a glimpse of the current world scenario tells us that it is time to revoke the sense of humanity. But, it is important to consider that humanity, though a collective term, is effectively adopted by self-assimilation, not impulsion.
