XMUN 2020:NSC
As summer came to an end, our school geared up once again to prepare for the annual Intra XMUN. This year bought the fourth edition of the conference, yet it was not quite like the others that came before, courtesy of the Coronavirus. Moved to an online platform, the 2020 XMUN was sure going to be an interesting feat.
This year brought about the presence of six committees namely the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the National Security Council (NSC), the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) and finally the All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM). Each council was introduced to their own committee-specific issue upon which they were expected to debate and reach a consensus by the end of the session.
The topic that the National Security Council was presented with was of the Uri Surgical Strike. The meeting took place on the 19th of September 2016, a day after the attack that cost India 19 soldier lives. The team was expected to formulate some sort of plan as a reaction to the strike, whether it be retaliatory or defensive. For the next couple of hours, each member continued offering all sorts of solutions and propositions. Multiple directives were written, approved, rejected and the team tried their best to reach a common decision.
Being a crisis committee, the council was hit with a brick around the end of the session. The Prime Minister caught word of a spy that leaked all the information of the meeting to the terrorist groups. Left with roughly half an hour, each member took turns to propose ideas that they deemed fit for the new situation. Unfortunately, by the time the clock ran out, the team was still split over the decision of whether to carry on with their original plan or try to fish out the spy. The next day, which would be the 20th of September, the NSC’s headbutt led to the Kashmiri base being attacked again.
Although the council couldn’t quite reach a conclusive decision, they do get credit for their determination. They ran into numerous problems, be it inadvertent or deliberate, but they still kept going to present the Prime Minister with the best possible plan. And I believe she’ll also agree with me on this one, that this team did have the potential to produce well thought out results.
